Tansky OHV Rec-Site / Riding Location

The Tansky OHV site (Off Hiway Vehicle)  is on Vancouver Island just northwest of the town of Jordan River.  Tansky is one of the Rec-Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) OHV sites and is jointly funded by the province and through fundraising by the stewards. This riding area has a well built and well kept trail system. Andy,Bruce,Geoff, Peter, Ken, Jeremy, and the Geritol II's (a group from the VMC) have designed trails that are fun for everyone, but when  the B.C. rain starts to pour, the trails become  pretty technical and challenging as you wind through big West Coast forests. This is typical coast riding with 6 ft ferns, 10ft wide cedars, rocks, roots, and views of the Olympic Mountains across Juan de Fuca Strait. There are several RV sites currently (2018) under construction and several roughed in tent sites too.  The road system is all on BC Crown Land and these resource roads are frequented by logging traffic. Also of note are the new provincial regulations that require a dirtbike or ATV to be registered with-in the province, Tansky Rec-Site is not exempt from this legislation. There are  Forest Service Roads that criss-cross the area and you are advised to carry your proof of registration on your person.

The site is currently stewarded by an island dirt bike club. The continued hard work and dedication of the Vancouver Island Dirt Riders Association is ensuring that this riding area is one to check out for sure.  see the BCORMA "Lets Ride BC" guide for more information.

----Directions to Tansky OHV REC-SITE Riding Area & parking:

From Victoria, head west on Hwy 14 through Sooke to Jordan River (approx 30 km from Sooke to Jordan River. Note: stock up on supplies in Sooke. Continue west on Hwy 14 for about 3 km past Jordan River, take the major logging road on the right (directly across from China Beach Provincial Park entrance). Drive up Jordan River North Main logging road for about 500 ft to the new parking area on your right. Watch for gravel and log haul trucks coming out.

TANSKY OHV rec-site is owned by the Province of BC and managed by the Vancouver Island Dirt Riders Assoc. (VIDRA) The poeple that brought you the VIHSS racing series.

The Jordan River (JR) Main access road is frequented by various logging trucks and is sometimes closed during the week for log hauls. There is active logging north of Tansky off the N300. So limit your use of the haul roads to the weekends, or be very careful for log haul trucks on the mainline. Gate conditions change with out notice, Please respect the gates. There are BC Hydro dams and/or expensive machinery that these gates help protect.

Riding Area access from Parking area:

Head out the backside of the parking area (NE corner) over the cordoroy and up the wide novice trail(skid road) to the bridge (bridges are 50 inches wide and were designed for off-road motorcycles and ATVs). Continue over the bridge and up the narrower trail to the skid road. Take in the views of the Olympic Mountains in Washington across the Juan de Fuca Strait from here, and soak up the sun as you get above the summer fog down below.
All Riders must now detour here (until a new trail segment is re-built)
Turn left up the skid road for 200 ft.and then right onto North main. Go 400 ft. to the JR main line gate(it may be open)

Just to recap, ALL RIDERS should turn left at the skid road and follow it out to the "North" mainline (FSR). Turn right & go up the hill to the yellow gate, and go around the right side of the gate. You are now at the bottom SE corner of the Tansky trail network. Consult your maps. Be very careful for trucks coming and going on this section of the mainline. There is good visability, but be safe and ride to the right.

To access the main infeed trail to the riding area, head up Jordan River Road (JR main) for maybe 2 km to just past the 65 tonne bridge. Look for the second and third trails on your left into the bush. This is the start of Tansky Main. Please respect the PRIVATE PROPERTY on the lower side of the JR main. The owner is a dirtbiker, but has not granted YOU access to his acreage.

Be Safe
You must (under provincial law) have 3rd party liability insurance to ride on a forest service road. Web search this topic for more info. Protect yourself.
If you insist on accessing this area during during active hauling hours (M thru F 6:30am to 5:00 pm): Do not ride the roads. It is not adviseable to ride up North main farther than the Jordan Main gate. It is narrow, twisty and steep, leaving little room for safety. Watch for loaded trucks coming out at speed. Be ready to go into the ditch and get out of their way. Be safe and respect the other users of the area.
