Looking Back, but Brapping ahead! (Adrians Perspective)

With the kickoff to the 2015 VIHSS season less than a month away, I can’t help but take stock of the ground we have covered as a dirtbike community on beautiful Vancouver Island over the last few years.  Most notably, the formation of the Vancouver Island Dirt Riders Association as a governing body for the Vancouver Island Hare Scramble Series(VIHSS).  Breaking away from the oversight of the PNWMA was a difficult decision for the Vancouver Island racers but a necessary one(in my opinion) to empower the Vancouver island dirtbiking community to forge ahead with greater autonomy.  And forge ahead we did, with more dollars remaining on the island, we were able to purchase our own timing and scoring system.  We were able with the backing of VIDRA to make inroads into some of the land access issues on the island to secure future riding and racing areas.  But one of the most progressive changes VIDRA has made will come into effect this year.  For 2015 the Womens, Junior Under and Junior Over classes are no more!  Instead they are replaced with Beginner, Novice, and Novice Advanced.

Traditionally, the “Junior Over” class has been the largest by far, and the “Junior Under” and “Womens” turnouts have been fairly small.  The wide range of rider abilities for competitors in the Junior over class meant those at the bottom could be easily discouraged from future races.  With the ridership in these 3 categories being re-allocated, racing will be more competitive and fun for all 3 Novice classes.   So the message I want to get across as we get ready to race the KATOOM is……….  COME ON OUT!   WE HAVE A CLASS FOR YOU!If you ride a dirtbike consider coming out for a race or two in 2015! The VIDRA executive and race organizers have been working hard to make the VIHSS series fun for riders of all levels.

In addition to the fun of coming out for a race, you will also have the opportunity to meet some of the movers and shakers of the Vancouver Island riding scene. These are the people in our offroad riding community that are making a difference. These are the people jumping through the hoops to ensure we have access to riding areas in the future, these are the people building trails we all love to ride and these are the people organizing events.   You may even one day find yourself amongst the VIDRA executive, you just never know. But the first step is showing up!

The KATOOM goes down on March 22, 2015

See you there!!
